The Role of the Governors

All schools in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. Regulations define three core functions consistent with the strategic role of the Governing Body. These are to:

  • set the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school
  • hold the Headteacher to account for its educational performance
  • ensure that financial resources are well spent

As a Voluntary Aided school Woodchester has a total of 12 governors. The Governing Body was reconstituted in February 2015 and consists of:

  • 7 foundation governors recommended by the Church and approved by the Diocese
  • 2 parent governors elected by the parents and carers
  • 1 staff governor elected by the staff
  • 1 Local Authority governor who was nominated by the school and approved by the LA
  • The Headteacher

Each governor serves for a four year term of office which can then be renewed. The Chair and Vice-chair are elected annually at the first Full Governing Body meeting of the academic year. Each governor brings different strengths and skills to the governing body and we are committed to ensuring that all pupils get the best possible education and achieve their maximum potential.

The governing body forms part of the management of the school, working in partnership with the Headteacher and staff: in strategic planning, in ensuring and improving the quality of education provided at Woodchester, developing policies and keeping the school under review. It also oversees the school's finances. It acts as a 'critical friend' to the school in good times and bad, offering support, advice and challenge.

There are three Full Governing Body meetings a year. Curriculum and Standards meetings are held once a month and all governors who are available (which is the majority) attend these. Governors will also be on one or more of the sub-committees which meet termly: Finance, Staffing/Pay, Premises/Health and Safety and Ethos. These committees report back to other governors at the Full Governing Body meetings. Appeals, Complaints and Admissions sub-committees meet when the need arises. All governors visit school regularly and play an active role in school life.
