Welcome to Ash Class Reception/Year 1
I am Mrs Holmes, the class teacher, and together with our Teaching Assistant Mrs Oliver, we have been nurturing children in Ash for 9 years. We are also lucky to be supported by Mrs Adams on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Banks teaches Ash every Friday alongside Mrs Lusty and Mrs Adams, her Teaching Assistants. We are a mixed class of Reception and some Year 1 children.
For the reception children, we feel that it is important to make the transition from home to school life as gentle as possible. We have very close ties with Woodchester Playgroup, and each week pre-school children come into Ash for snack time. Our classroom opens onto an outdoor covered play area just for Ash children, who make good use of this safe, fun area to play and learn with sand, our play shop and playhouse, or with the educational toys.
Once starting school, the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is based on the principles of giving Early Years children the best possible start in life. We put this into practice by allowing the children to play and explore in an inviting environment; encouraging active learning and creative thinking.
The Year One children follow the National Curriculum where we build on the foundations of the Reception Year but still maintain the hands on learning experiences.
Most important of all is for every child in Ash to have fun while they are learning.
